Fin Swimming

Watch a finswimmer gliding through the water and the obvious comparison to draw is with that of a dolphin. The poise, grace and finesse attributed to one of nature’s most beautiful marine mammals can also be associated with a top-class finswimmer in the pool. With the fin moving seemingly as an extension of the body in perfect time, it is little wonder that the best exponents of this sport can achieve unbelievably fast times in the water.

Imagine swimming 50 meters in less than 15 seconds, or 100 meters in less than 35 seconds – these are World Times reached in finswimming. Today, athletes from over 50 countries in five continents participate in this exciting and fast growing sport. Competitive finswimmers use a large monofin – a large fibreglass blade with a rubber foot pocket attached. Races range from 50 to 1500 meters on the surface using a special front-face snorkel, to maintain a streamlined body position. The finswimmer swims freestyle with the monofin and a dolphin kick with the arms stretched forward at all times. Please Contact Us to find out more about Finswimming in New Zealand.
